Sweaty Palms & Soles

Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating is seen in some people. It is seen in palms, soles, underarms. It frequently begins at puberty. The problem may last for several years. It often causes disability at work and social embarassment. Sometimes it may lead to complications like pompholyx and contact dermatitis.

Treatment:

  1. Use of antiperspirants.
  2. Topical application of medicated solutions.
  3. Botulinum toxin
  4. lontophoresis: Consists of Introduction of selected agents in an ionic form through normal uninjured skin. It works in hyperhidrosis by causing poral occlusion. Initially treatment has to be done on alternate days. When control is achieved iontophoresis can be done as maintenance once in few weeks.
    Other indications for iontophoresis include for treatment of wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and rejuvenation of skin.

    Side effects:

    Usually safe, office procedure.

    Side effects if at all are minimal and include redness, tingling sensation.
